As for your points / questions...
1. Journalists know what to expect when they join a national / international media outlet. The news agenda is set by the news editors whose politics are entrenched in a particular direction (because that is what the moguls dictated). Usually, it's to the right of politics.
2. When journalists work at local / regional level, the vast majority of the time there is no political interference. Editors do, however, tend to shy away from anything controversial if it is going to upset a major advertiser (perhaps a fossil fuels company). Newspapers especially are on death row - they need the money.
3. Many adults learn their information about what is going on in the world, from the news, and from social media, so journalists are indeed, to that effect, teachers. The well educated among us know to check several sources before believing a story....
